Pierre Deligne se zasloužil o nalezení nových spojitostí mezi různými oblastmi matematiky, což vedlo k řadě důležitých objevů. Jeho největším přínosem je velkolepý důkaz Weilovy domněnky publikovaný v roce 1973.

We shortly describe the biography of Pierre Deligne and then concentrate on his main mathematical results. In particular, his proof of the Ramanujan conjecture and the Weil conjecture. To this end we introduce the concept of the Riemann $zeta$-function in the complex plane as well as its discrete analogue over finite fields. We also mention Deligne's contribution to solving and a generalization of the 21st Hilbert problem on the existence of differential equations with singular points.
