Fatigue properties of cast Ni-base superalloy IN 713LC are critically dependent on casting defects. The aim of the paper is to report on structural analysis, determination of defect size and distribution in nominally identical casts and to relate the statistical parameters with fatigue life. Statistical method of the largest extreme value distribution has been applied to characterize the casting defect distribution. The fatigue crack initiation is predominantly dependent on size, location and distribution of microshrinkages. High scatter of fatigue life is typical for material from batches produced even under nominally identical cast conditions. The fatigue life under stress symmetrical loading was correlated with results of metallographic examination of defect size and distribution. The statistical method proposed by Murakami, based on the largest extreme value distribution was found to be an effective tool for material characterization.
