The paper presents results of combustion of pelletized fuels, namely sewage sludge, 2:1 and 4:1 blend of sewage and paper mill sludge, and straw pellets (reference fuel) in a pilot plant fluidized bed combustor. The fuel properties, namely mechanical resistance, hardness, pellet moisture resistance, material and bulk density, moisture content, higher and lower heating values are presented. The flue gas was analysed after reaching a steady state at bed temperatures 800-870oC for concentrations of mercury, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, NOx, N2O, ammonia, methane, and hydrogen chloride. The analysis of ash after combustion showed that magnesium, potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, zinc, arsenic, and lead remained mostly in the ash after combustion, while all cadmium from all fuels used was transferred into the flue gas together with a substantial part of chlorine and mercury. While a usual flue gas cleaning is still necessary, an alternative fuel may be used for fluidised bed combustion.
