How does one research reading, which undoubtedly belongs to our immaterial cultural heritage and is invaluable in shaping our identity? How to find the scattered sources in different languages without which it is impossible to think of researching the history of reading, the texts and media read, the reader’s practices, emotional and material reactions in Europe from the 18th to the 21st century? The evidence of the transaction between reading subjects and reading material is scattered, insufficiently identified and thus nearly untraceable. Without collecting, describing and structuring, this rich “human archive” will remain unknown and the history of reading largely unexplored. The READ IT consortium aims to develop an innovative tool for automatic and manual identification, text indexing and annotation to preserve and enrich this important common heritage. The outcomes of this cooperation between computer scientists, digital humanists, historians and literary scholars will be presented by Brigitte Ouvry-Vial and François Vignale (Le Mans Université), Claire Madl and Michael Wögerbauer (ÚČL AV ČR).
