Species distribution models are a useful tool, which is now often applied in many branches of biology, especially when dealing with threatened organisms. In combination with GIS techniques, these models are especially important and valuable for predicting occurrence of rare species in poorly explored areas. The species distribution models (SDMs) are often the only method to measure orchid biodiversity in these regions. Here we show an axample of using SDMs for analysis of orchid species occurrence data from Colombia. When choosing the experimental plots, we attempted to cover the majority of elevation gradients where orchids are present, apart from the above-mentioned accessibility.
