Po většinu vlády císaře Rudolfa II. (1576–1612) byla Praha jeho rezidenčním městem. Přítomnost panovníka a jeho dvora, říšských i zemských úřadů zapříčinila extenzivní rozvoj Pražského hradu a sídelní aglomerace okolo. Transformace Prahy do jednoho z předních evropských center moci se nedotkla jen šlechticů, ale také specializovaných řemeslníků a obchodníků hledajících ekonomické a životní příležitosti. Praha také lákala diplomatické aktéry různého typu: od pověřených pozorovatelů permanentně reprezentujících přední evropské vládce, menších či větších delegací přicházejících plnit k císařskému dvoru konkrétní úkoly přes sekretáře a agenty zastupující malé státy nebo jednotlivce až k umělcům plnícím diplomatické úkoly. Aktivity těchto osob byly vždy vázány na určitý prostor, přičemž termínem „prostor“ rozumíme jak území definované fyzicky (topograficky), tak i sociálně, pomocí vzájemně komunikujících aktérů (dále viz práce Renate Dürr, Gerd Schwerhoff, Susanne Rau).
Z vazby mezi diplomaty a prostorem vyvstává v případě rudolfinské Prahy řada otázek, která byla diskutována na naší konferenci: samotná místa diplomatických jednání, vztahy mezi místy veřejnými a soukromými i témata spojená s využíváním aristokratických a dvorských rezidencí a jejich hranic


For the majority of Emperor Rudolf II’s rule (1576–1612), Prague was the city of his permanent residence. The ruler’s presence, as well as the presence of his court, imperial and land offices, served as an impetus for extensive construction works both at the Prague Castle and in the city agglomeration beneath it. This transformation of Prague into a European center of power attracted not only aristocrats, but also specialized craftsmen and traders looking for opportunities the city offered to earn a living, develop their careers, and gain power or wealth. The emperor’s court also attracted diplomatic players of various types. They included diplomats at the level of authorized envoys permanently representing leading European rulers, smaller or larger foreign delegations coming to the emperor with specific temporary tasks, numerous agents and secretaries representing smaller states or interests of various individuals, as well as family members of the diplomats or artists with diplomatic tasks. Their activities always took place in connection with a specific space. The term “space” can be understood as having a double meaning – a topographically delineated place on the one hand and as a social space formed or influenced by people acting or communicating within this space on the other hand (see the work by Renate Dürr, Gerd Schwerhoff, Susanne Rau).
Numerous interesting questions arise with respect to the relation between the diplomatic players and a particular place or space in connection with the court of Rudolf II, which were discussed at the conference: f. e. social spaces and places to diplomatic negotiations, relationship between the public and private spaces, the topic of aristocratic and court residences and their borders.
