Kapitola řeší osobnost apoštola Pavla, jeho život, dílo, historické zařazení a teologické důrazy na základě informací z jeho listů, Skutků apoštolů, jakož i z hlediska dějin bádání. Pozornost je věnována také formování korpusu Pavlových epištol. Kritické bádání je reflektováno od doby konce 18. a 19. století (C. Heinrici, C. Wilke, K. Bauer, J. Weiss, C. Montefiore a mnozí jiní), přes éru 20. století (např. E. Norden, R. Bultmann, C. H. Dodd, E. Käsemann) až po badatele kladoucí důraz na zařazení apoštola Pavla do kontextu judaismu (J. Jeremias, W. D. Davies, K. Stendahl), jež jsou předchůdci nové perspektivy zastoupené především N. T. Wrightem a J. D. G. Dunnem. Nová perspektiva koriguje pojem „smluvní nomismus“ a postupně se z ní rodí radikálně nová perspektiva trvající na profilaci obrazu apoštola Pavla jen z jeho listů, bez Skutků apoštolů a striktně v kontextu judaismu Druhého chrámu. Roli zde hrají židovské pseudoepigrafy, apokalypsy, svitky od Mrtvého moře, archeologické nálezy, politické a sociální aspekty doby. Mezi tyto badatele patří D. Boyarin, P. Fredriksen, M. Nanos, F. Abel, P. Eisenbaum a další.

The chapter addresses the Apostle Paul’s personality, life, work, historical classification, and theological emphases based on information from his letters, the Acts of the Apostles, and the history of scholarship. Attention is also given to forming the corpus of Paul’s epistles. Critical scholarship is reflected from the late 18th and 19th century (C. Heinrici, C. Wilke, K. Bauer, J. Weiss, C. Montefiore and many others) through the 20th-century era (e.g. E. Norden, R. Bultmann, C. H. Dodd, E. Käsemann) to scholars emphasizing the inclusion of the apostle Paul in the context of Judaism (J. Jeremias, W. D. Davies, K. Stendahl), who are the forerunners of the new perspective represented mainly by N. T. Wright and J. D. G. Dunn. The new perspective corrects the notion of “covenantal nomism” and gradually gives birth to a radically new perspective insisting on profiling the image of the Apostle Paul only from his letters, without the Acts of the Apostles and strictly in the context of Second Temple Judaism. Jewish pseudepigrapha, the Apocalypse, the Dead Sea Scrolls, archaeological finds, and political and social aspects of the time all play a role. These scholars include D. Boyarin, P. Fredriksen, M. Nanos, F. Abel, P. Eisenbaum and others.
