The paper presents a popular Czech adaptation of Aristophanes’ Lysistrate created in then Czechoslovakia during the era of the so-called political „normalization“ (1970s and 1980s) after the era of the so-called “Prague Spring” that was suppressed in August 1968 by the military invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops. In 1971, the Municipal Theatre in Hradec Králové presented an adaptation of Aristophanes’ Lysistrate called The Most Beautiful War by Vladimír Renčín. The production immediately gained great popularity with the audience, and also with amateur and professional theatre practitioners. Thanks to this, Lysistrate became by far the most often played Aristophanes’ comedy on Czech stage. In my paper, I outline the causes of the enormous popularity of The Most Beautiful War related to its aesthetic qualities specific to the given period in Czech theatre. To explain the prominent role of this adaptation in the „normalized“ Czechoslovakia, the paper concerns with the means of collaboration of the text with the ideology of the era and the message it (supposedly) communicated to its addressees, the target audiences.
