This article shows the influence of the Israelite prophetic traditions on early Jewish sapiential tradition as exemplified by the Book of Wisdom. This deuterocanonical text draws on various ideas from the Book of Isaiah, especially from its second part known as Deutero-Isaiah. The interconnection between prophecy and wisdom might have already built on the traditional common grounds, but it had also its theological and ethical implications. The prophetic tradition fostered the emphasis on monotheism, as well as the assumption of the prophetic “deed-consequence nexus” (“Tun-Ergehen-Zusammenhang”) and its application to the activity and destiny of the “blameless” and the “righteous”. Thus, it facilitated the reflection on the ethical topics in mutually confronting the current state and the future perspective of humankind. Appropriation of the prophetic motifs thus became a symptom of an emerging phase in the history of wisdom as represented by early Judaism.
