Kapitola zkoumá postavení a aktivity bezvěreckého hnutí v Československu po roce 1918. Zatímco byli bezvěrci před rokem 1914 v Rakousku sledováni s podezřením a v letech 1914-1918 dokonce perzekvováni, nastolení demokratické republiky jim slibovalo poprvé klidný a důstojný život. V řadě ohledů však první republika bezvěrce zklamala, když vlivem ohledů na poměry na Slovensku nedošlo ke slibovanému oddělení státu a církve a ani k odstranění výuky náboženství ze škol. Na druhé straně narůst svobody vedl k prudkému růstu počtu organizovaných bezvěrců. Kapitola se zaměřuje na snahy bezvěrců o řadu právních reforem.

The chapter examines situation and activities of the atheist movement in Czechoslovakia after 1918. While atheists were viewed with suspicion in Austria before 1914 and even persecuted in the years 1914-1918, the establishment of the democratic republic promised them a peaceful and dignified life for the first time. However, the First Republic disappointed the Atheists when, due to the political circumstances in Slovakia, the promised separation of state and church failed. Also the abolition of religious education from schools never occured. On the other hand, new freedom led to a sharp increase in the number of organized Atheists. The chapter focuses on Atheists' efforts at number of legal reforms.
