In this conversation on the political situation in Brazil, Frédéric Vandenberghe will present a retrospective analysis of the rise and fall of Jair Messias Bolsonaro from the perspective of political sociology. To understand the grammar of messianic populism, he will look at the role of religion, the military, the markets, the judges, and the media in the asymmetric polarisation of public discourse under Bolsonaro. He will reflect on the multiple crises (economic, ecological, political, military, etc.) and conclude the talk with a discussion of the prospects of social democracy under the newly elected president Lula.
