Cílem předložené studie je upozornit na skutečnost, že v minulosti ruského prostředí, zejména mezi vládnoucími vrstvami, sehrával specifickou roli chov psa, ruského chrta – barzoje -, který se v moderní době stal jedním ze symbolů Ruska, jeho tzv. národním plemenem. Metodologicky se studie opírá o výklad chovu psa jako součásti kulturních dějin v intencích interpretace současného britského historika Petera Burka. Studie v zásadě vychází z primárních a sekundárních pramenů. Avšak těch, v nichž se explicitně hovoří o chovu ruských chrtů, není mnoho. Výklad se proto opírá o další, tzv. ego dokumenty, zejména deníkového charakteru a pojednání několika osobností, které v 18. a 19. století o místě a úloze barzoje v ruské společnosti psali.

The aim of the presented study is to draw attention to the fact that in the past the Russian environment, especially among the ruling layers, played a specific role in the breeding of a dog, a Russian greyhound – a borzoi – that in modern times has become one of the symbols of Russia, its so-called national breed. Methodologically, the study relies on the interpretation of dog breeding as part of cultural history because of the interpretation of the contemporary British historian Peter Burke. In principle, the study is based on primary and secondary sources. However, there are not many in which there is explicit talk of breeding Russian greyhounds. The interpretation is therefore based on other so-called ego documents, especially the diary character and treatises of several personalities who wrote about the place and role of borzoi in Russian society in the 18th and 19th centuries.
