Barrett’s esophagus (BE) is a serious complication of severe gastroesophageal reflux disease and a major risk factor for the development of esophageal cancer. The diagnosis of BE currently involves invasive endoscopy with sample collection and histological examination. Bile acids, a group of steroid compounds, were previously suggested to contribute to the progression of gastroesophageal reflux disease into BE. Bile acids are essential for lipid digestion in the small intestine, however due to their detergent properties they are toxic in high concentrations. This work is focused on development of methodology for analysis of bile acids in saliva and its possible application for a non-invasive diagnosis of BE.
