A históriás énekekben megjelenő orális és írott jegyek a műfajt egy tradicionális, énekelt és performatív költői hagyomány, valamint egy tanult, meglehetősen kifinomult, írott epikus költészet nagyon sajátos keverékének mutatják, amelyet ókori modellek is (például az Aeneis) befolyásoltak. A műfaj heterogenitása a kétféle poétikai mintázat szövegenként eltérő arányában is érzékelhető. Az epikus formulák használata kisebb-nagyobb mértékben elvárásaink szerint a műfaj összes darabját jellemzi. A históriás ének retorikai szerkezetének orális jellege akkor a legszembetűnőbb, ha a vers epikus formulákban gazdag. Laza, pongyola, előzetes definícióként fogalmazzunk úgy, hogy az epikus formula olyan gyakran alkalmazott kifejezés, szóbeli klisé, amely jellemzően ugyanabban a metrikai pozícióban jelenik meg egy versen belül, és esetleg a korpusz más verseiben is előfordul. Tanulmányunk e definíció pontosítására tesz kísérletet.

The oral and written features in the historical poems show the genre to be a very specific blend of a traditional, sung and performative poetic tradition and a learned, rather sophisticated, written epic poetry that was also influenced by ancient models (such as the Aeneid). The heterogeneity of the genre can also be perceived in the different proportions of the two types of poetic patterns for each text. The use of epic formulas to a greater or lesser extent characterizes all pieces of the genre. The oral nature of the rhetorical structure of the historical song is most noticeable when the poem is rich in epic formulas. As a loose, rough, preliminary definition, let's say that the epic formula is a frequently used expression, a verbal cliché, which typically appears in the same metrical position within a poem, and possibly occurs in other poems in the corpus. Our study attempts to clarify this definition.
