Micropollutants in wastewater present environmental and human health challenges. Many contaminants have major negative impacts on the environment even at very low concentrations. In this work, the sorption technique was used as an effective and inexpensive method for the removal of pollutants from water. For this purpose, several biochars were prepared and characterized from waste plant biomass – marine algae, microalgae and sunflower husks. Although biochar appears considerably promising for removing pollutants from water, the pyrolysis conditions of the biomass feedstock are key to the effectiveness of biochar. For this reason, optimal pyrolysis conditions were first sought for all 3types of biochar. Based on textural and surface properties, three biochars were selected and tested as suitable sorbents for the removal of three various pollutants commonly found in waters: acetaminophen - one of the most common analgesic and antipyrotic drugs and the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, naproxen, and diclofenac. Sorption efficiency of biochars was compared with commercial sorbents -activated carbon. In addition, competitive sorption experiments were also carried out.
