The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is one of the most important and critical problems associated with wastewater treatment plants. 8.7million tonnes of dry matter of sewage sludge were produced in the European Union in 2020. Due to the fact that sewage sludge contains large amount of substances including microplastics, which are not at all beneficial for human health, the conditions for sludge management are going to be significantly tightened in the EU countries. One of the options related to sludge liquidation is the production of biofuel in the form of granules or pellets from sewage sludge enriched by waste celluloses. This study presents results of combustion of pelletised fuels, namely,
sewage and paper mill sludge, and their 2:1 and 4:1 blends in a pilot plant fluidised bed combustor. The flue gas was analysed after reaching a steady state at bed temperatures of 800-870oC for concentrations of mercury, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, NOx, ammonia, methane, and hydrogen chloride. Although a usual flue gas cleaning was still necessary, especially for SO2, the addition of paper
mill sludge reduced the mercury concentration in the flue gas to acceptable limits. The pellets containing both sewage and paper mill sludge can be used as an alternative fuel for fluidised bed combustion. The achieved results show that the resulting quality of such alternative biofuel is fully comparable to conventional fossil fuels. The results show that the solar dryer technology for pellets drying ensures the lowest levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) at the level of 26 EUR/GJ, which could directly compete with lignite.
