    Highly crosslinked monolithic capillary columns with inner diameter of 450 μm were prepared by radical polymerization of pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-methacrylate, and n-octadecyl methacrylate or sulfobetaine methacrylate in the presence of methanol, dodecyl alcohol, and polyethyleneglycol lauryl ether. The columns were evaluated in liquid chromatography employing a water-rich and organic-rich mobile phases or tetrahydrofuran in the case of inverse size-exclusion chromatography. The results confirmed that the columns have high efficiency (exceeding 100,000 theoretical lates/meter) and selectivity, regardless of whether hydrophobic (n-octadecyl methacrylate) or hydrophilic (sulfobetaine methacrylate) monomer was used for their preparation. The key parameter influencing the efficiency and permeability of the columns is the ratio between the porogens (methanol and dodecyl alcohol). It has been found that when n-octadecyl methacrylate is replaced by sulfobetaine methacrylate, it is necessary to reduce the proportion of dodecyl alcohol in the polymerization mixture to achieve similar efficiency and permeability for both types of columns.
