This paper presents a model of major components in a hybrid electric bus with a fuel cell. The model is built with the goal of helping the bus designer optimize the electrical components of the bus, for example, to select a suitable size of the fuel cell and battery. The components included in the model are the electric machine, bus motion, fuel cell, and battery model. The electric machine model (100kW, 5000 min−1) and the lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery cell (Toshiba SCiB 23Ah) were experimentally verified. The model can dynamically calculate the bus motion in a desired driving cycle and output variables such as motor losses, battery losses, currents, voltages, used battery capacity, hydrogen consumption, etc. Sample results from the model are shown in the paper.
