The scintillation, luminescence and optical properties of the multicomponent Gd3Sc2Ga(2+x)Al(1-x)O12:Ce (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1), Gd2.957Sc1.905Ga(2.138+x)Al(1-x)O12:Ce (x = 0, 1) and the (200, 1000, 5000 ppm) Mg2+ codoped Gd3Sc2Ga2.75Al0.25O12:Ce single crystals grown by the μ-PD method were characterized. Scintillation decay kinetics and light yield were correlated with the sum of the content of Ga and Sc in the host. While the Gaadmixed GSAG:Ce composition exhibited higher scintillation efficiency compared to pure GSAG:Ce, it also showed very high afterglow, due to an intense delayed electron-hole recombination at Ce3+ centres. This was supported by the calculated activation energy obtained from the temperature dependence of photoluminescence decay times. Codoping with Mg2+ significantly improved afterglow compared to pure GSAG:Ce, however, at the expense of light yield
