The aim of the study is to reconstruct the course of the confiscation of books in Olomouc by Swedish troops in 1642-1646 and to present the current state of mapping of the preserved books. The case of the Swedish book booty from Olomouc is exceptional in the context of the Thirty Years' War, both because of the long stay of the Swedish troops in the city and because no original catalog of the books taken has survived. The study reveals that the process did not follow any simplistic scheme, as it might appear from contemporary narrative sources or subsequent historiography. What influenced the course of the book confiscations, apart from the lack of motivation and interest of the Swedish command, was the untypical situation of the long-term occupation of the town, the necessity of long-term coexistence and at least informal respect for the legal status of the religious institutions and their inhabitants. Moreover, the extent of the surviving specimens has shown that the spoils from Olomouc were among the most extensive in Bohemia. The key topics will also include the importance of these libraries for the history of Czech book culture before 1650 and documenting the “second life” of these libraries after their transport to Lutheran Sweden and watching their changing functions in a new environment.
