This paper is an introduction to the article collection ‘The changing shape of media dialogical networks’. It presents the concept of the dialogical network as an empirically based conceptualisation of the fluid concept ‘discourse’ that provides a fresh view on contextualisation practices in a variety of media and represents mediated communication in ways that foreground agency and social organisation in meaning-making processes. The paper situates the concept of the dialogical network in a historical context, summarises individual contributions and makes some suggestions for future research. The aim of the article collection is to grasp dialogical networks as a changing phenomenon depending on the current configuration of societies and of technologies enabling new communication practices.
