Kniha přináší první kritické vydání českého žaltáře, který byl vydán v Praze roku 1487 anonymním tiskařem, snad Martinem z Tišnova, o němž je známo, že o dva roky později vytiskl v Kutné Hoře kompletní Bibli. První tištěný žaltář je nejstarším známým dokladem čtvrtého překladu žalmů do staré češtiny. Překladatel není znám, ale předpokládá se, že patřil k úzkému okruhu mistrů pražské utrakvistické univerzity. Tato nová verze žalmů byla šířena především tiskem a byla dále použita v kompletních vydáních bible z let 1488, 1489 a 1506 a jako součást samostatného žaltáře z let 1499 a 1508. Rozšířila se také v rukopisech, jak dokládá několik opisů z konce 15. a počátku 16. století. Kniha je rozdělena do několika částí. První část tvoří úvodní studie, která se zabývá okolnostmi vzniku tisku, jazykovým popisem čtvrtého překladu a tradicí překladu čtvrtého žalmu v tiscích a rukopisech z konce 15. a počátku 16. století. Druhou část knihy tvoří kritické a komentované vydání všech 150 žalmů doplněné předmluvou, kantikami, hymnem Te Deum, Atanášovým vyznáním víry a explicitem. Jejich text je zde otištěn v přepisu do novodobého českého pravopisu. Opravy tiskových chyb a odchylek od latinské předlohy jsou zaznamenány v první části kritického aparátu, v druhé části jsou uvedeny lexikální varianty. Kniha je doplněna několika přílohami, mezi něž patří např. podrobný popis obsahu Prvního tištěného žaltáře, časová osa, která v chronologickém pořadí ukazuje jednotlivé staročeské překlady žaltáře a celé bible, a soupis dochovaných rukopisných a tištěných pramenů staročeského překladu Knihy žalmů. Text je navíc doplněn obrázky z vybraných biblických rukopisů a tisků.

The book provides the very first, critical edition of the Czech Psalter, which was published in Prague in 1487 by an anonymous printer, perhaps Martin of Tišnov, who is known to have printed a complete Bible in Kutná Hora two years later. The First Printed Psalter is the earliest known record of the fourth translation of the Psalms into Old Czech. The translator is not known, but it is assumed that he belonged to a close circle of the masters of the Prague Utraquist university. This new version of the Psalms was mainly disseminated in print and was further used in the complete Bible editions from 1488, 1489 and 1506, and as part of a separate Psalter from 1499 and 1508. It also spread in manuscripts, as evidenced by several copies from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The book is divided into several parts. The first part consists of an introductory study, dealing with the circumstances of the origin of the print, the linguistic description of the fourth translation, and the tradition of the fourth Psalm translation in the late-15th- and early-16th-century prints and manuscript copies. The second part of the book comprises the critical and annotated edition of all 150 Psalms accompanied by the preface, canticles, the hymn Te Deum, the Athanasian Creed, and the explicit. Their text is printed here in its transcription into Modern Czech spelling. The corrections of printing errors and deviations from the Latin source are recorded in the first part of the critical apparatus, and the second part presents lexical variants. The book is supplemented by several appendices, including, for example, a detailed description of the contents of the First Printed Psalter, a timeline showing in chronological order the various Old Czech translations of the Psalter and the entire Bible, and an inventory of extant manuscript and printed sources of the Old Czech translation of the Book of Psalms. In addition, the text is supplemented with images from selected biblical manuscripts and printed books.
