Recent research has shown that a recurring set of four ceramic vessels, the so-called “Four-part set”, was associated with the serving and consumption of beer in Early Bronze Age (EBA) Mesopotamia. An additional set composed of a spouted stand and a pierced jar can also be acknowledged as a “Two-part set”. These two sets appear, either individually or together, among the funerary drinking paraphernalia attested in a series of graves in Central Mesopotamia and in some peculiar contexts at Tell Hariri, ancient Mari. The archaeological evidence also suggests that their distribution might extend into far Southern Mesopotamia. This paper explores the social practice(s) behind these distinctive drinking sets, combining functional analysis of pottery, experimental reconstruction, and textual sources. The purpose is to outline the key features of a set of drinking practices specific to the EBA and to explain their geographical and chronological distribution.
