Galén kritizoval Aristotelovu definici času ze dvou hledisek: jednak zpochybnil důvody, která Aristotela vedou k tvrzení, že čas je bytostně spjatý s pohybem, jednak upozornil na to, že Aristotelova definice času je kruhová, neboť definuje čas pomocí původně časových určení (“dříve” a “později”). Tradice dále Galénovi připisuje tezi, podle níž Platón považoval čas za trvání, které je na pohybu nezávislé. S Galénovou polemikou se vyrovnává Alexandr z Afrodisiady. Článek zkoumá tyto Alexandrovy argumenty a rekonstruuje Alexandrovo vlastní pojetí času, které na Galénovu kritiku zřejmě do jisté míry navazuje.

Galen criticized Aristotle’s definition of time from two points of view: first, he questioned the reasons that lead Aristotle to claim that time is intrinsically linked to motion, second, he pointed out that Aristotle’s definition of time is circular, since he defines time by means of originally temporal determinations (“before” and “after”). Tradition further attributes to Galen the thesis that Plato regarded time as a duration that is independent of motion. Galen’s polemic is dealt with by Alexander of Aphrodisias. This paper examines these arguments of Alexander and reconstructs Alexander’s own conception of time, which seems to build on Galen’s critique to some extent.
