Using quantitative methods, this presentation will first study Taiwanese elites from a diachronic and comparative perspective during the Japanese and early post-war periods, covering the years 1897–1953. The dataset includes information about 220 local councils from the Japanese period (1897–1945) with 1,451 council members and 25 post-war councils with 6,117 members. Based on comparative theories about the historical stability of elites (e.g., Scheidel 2017), the study tested the hypothesis that local political elites – often recruited from gentry families with a substantial business portfolio – were generally able to maintain their social position after 1945 political transition. Instead of tracking individuals and their families, the study described the group of political elites structurally by assigning their involvement with different types of organizations to different societal sectors – portfolios of prestige – according to a classification adopted from the positional analysis. The portfolios of prestige are here understood as habitus (as habits, skills, and dispositions of a group). This allowed me to compare the habitus of pre-war and post-war groups. Secondly, the presentation will discuss how the understanding of Taiwanese pollical elites varies depending on the origin of the source (China, Taiwan) and its type (diary and newspapers).
