L’étude des réseaux de sociabilité et de la production littéraire a montré la large réception dont jouirent les œuvres et les idées de Voltaire en Europe centrale. Cet article analyse les particularités matérielles et commerciales de la diffusion de ses ouvrages pour nuancer ce tableau. La prédominance massive des ouvrages en français, l’importance du marché de la contrefaçon et la pression de la censure ne permirent pas une réception fluide de l’ensemble de l’œuvre du philosophe. Cette dernière resta tout d’abord rattachée au groupe social qui pratiquait le plus le français, la noblesse. L’omniprésence des livres et du théâtre de Voltaire transforma ensuite ce qui aurait dû être un produit de distinction, en un objet commun suscitant des mouvements de distanciation qui varient d’un groupe social à un autre. La renommée de l’auteur lui valut enfin d’être soumis à une censure plus stricte que ne le furent d’autres auteurs.

The historiography of sociability networks and literary production has shown how wide was the reception of Voltaire's works and ideas in Central Europe. This article analyses the material and commercial characteristics of the distribution of his works in order to bring more plasticity into this picture. The weigh of pirate editions and the pressure of censorship did not allow a smooth reception of Voltaire's „work“ as a whole. The author's fame also meant that he was subjected to stricter censorship than other authors. The massive predominance of works in French reveals that Voltaire could be perceived as the author mainly read in the circles of local nobility. Nevertheless, the omnipresence of Voltaire's books and drama – in any library, bookshop and on every theatres scenes – transformed what should have been a product of distinction into a common object. Thus, we also witness readers’ efforts distancing themselves toward Voltaire’s person and work, which varied from one social group to another.
