The editorial quality of the Brethren’s editions was far beyond the average level of Bohemian print production during the sixteenth century, both from a linguistic and from a typographical perspective. One of the reasons for this high quality was the intense activity of the Brethren’s editors and correctors, who used humanistic methods for editing and correcting texts. Historical sources such as the bishops’ correspondence indicate that publishing was a highly organised and collective activity, which included close collaboration among the Brethren’s seniors, bishops, and members of the Inner Council. Many of these leaders had studied abroad at universities in German-speaking lands where they became acquainted with humanist ideas and the latest innovations in printing and editorial practices. The position of the Bishop-Scribe was directly responsible for editorial supervision and proofreading, as well as for the distribution of the proofsheets to other congregations and the coordination of proofreading practices. It is therefore not surprising that such high-quality publications were printed when Jan Blahoslav was the Bishop-Scribe. As this chapter has shown, he was a passionate proponent of the humanist textual approach, which he had learnt during his studies in Wittenberg and Basel.
