Historický vývoj malované portrétní miniatury je odrazem společenských proměn v Evropě 16. – 20. století. Na výsluní se dostává spolu s bohatstvím a postavením rozvětvených aristokratických rodin a jejich oblibou v rodinných portrétech. Když se pak v rámci civilizačních proměn šíří v 19. století i mezi měšťanstvo, zastaví její rozmach překotný vědecko-technický pokrok, jehož výsledkem je i objev fotografie a stále snadnějších cest grafických reprodukcí. To vše provází pak ve 20. století úpadek vkusu, rozvrat společenských hodnot a také nedostupnost některých materiálů, zejména slonoviny. I pod tlakem však malovaná miniatura přežívá jako specifické umění pro nepočetné elity. Zájem o ni také ožívá spolu s oblibou sběratelství. Dnes můžeme obdivovat něžnou krásu miniatur a malířskou excelenci. S pomocí špičkového vědeckého výzkumu můžeme nahlédnout i pod povrch miniaturního díla, rozpoznat složení pigmentů i bravurní techniku jednotlivých mistrů. Otevíráme naše sbírkové fondy s cílem vyvolat znovu nadšení pro tento svébytný výtvarný směr. Náš zájem totiž možná předurčí i jeho budoucnost.

The historical development of the painted portrait miniature is a reflection of social changes in Europe in the 16th – 20th centuries. It came to prominence along with the wealth and status of extended aristocratic families and their popularity in family portraits. Then, when it spread to the bourgeoisie in the 19th century as part of the changes in civilization, its rise was halted by the rapid advances in science andtechnology that resulted in the discovery of photography and the ever easier waysof graphic reproduction. All this is accompanied in the 20th century by a declinein taste, a subversion of social values, and the unavailability of certain materials,especially ivory. Even under pressure, however, the painted miniature survives asa specific art form for the few among the elite. Interest in it is also reviving along with the popularity of collecting. Today we can admire the tender beauty of miniatures and their painting excellence. With the help of cutting-edge scientific research, we can even look beneath the surface of a miniature, discerning the composition of pigments and the bravura technique of individual masters. We are opening up our collections to rekindle enthusiasm for this distinctive artistic movement. Indeed,our interest may well predetermine its future.
