Rediscovery of the labour camp on the site of the Prague monument to J.V. Stalin in spring 2021 was the result of a construction plan of the Prague City Hall. The existence of this specific site had not been reflected in the historical memory of the site until then, nor in the literature devoted to the monstrous monument (removed in 1962), which was a masterpiece both of engineering and art and the most significant material manifestation of the cult of Stalin's personality outside the USSR. The discovered remains of the modest, purely purpose-built camp buildings, as well as artifacts and ecofacts that illustrate the living conditions of its inhabitants, contrast sharply with the costly, expressive and landscape dominant monument. The results of the archaeological research are thus a distinctive contribution to the contemporary debate on the nature of the Stalinist regime in Czechoslovakia, as they thematise the bloodless yet ubiquitous aspect of the regime's repression.
