Jednota bratrská jako malé církevní evangelické společenství působící v českých zemích udržovala kontakty s teologickými autoritami a učenci v zahraničí již od 16. století. Nový impuls k bádání o intelektuálních kontaktech v zahraničí v druhém decéniu 17. století zavdal nález úřední pozůstalosti jednoho z posledních předbělohorských biskupů Jednoty bratrské Matouše Konečného (1569–1622), sídlícího v Mladé Boleslavi, který je označován jako Archiv Matouše Konečného. Konečného archiv obsahuje také korespondenci učenců, která se v něm dochovala v souvislosti se vzděláním budoucích církevních služebníků na zahraničních vzdělávacích institucích. V případě škol v Herbornu a Brémách byl klíčovou postavou filolog a teolog Matthias Martinius (1572–1630). V Archivu Matouše Konečného se dochovalo jeho patnáct dopisů. Ty nám společně s korespondencí brémských studentů přibližují charakter vztahů mezi Jednotou bratrskou, resp. bratrskými seniory a rektorem brémského gymnázia, a dosvědčují vzájemné úzké vazby, které se promítly také do tisku děl bratrské provenience, určeným k nábožensko-vzdělávacím účelům.

The Unity of the Brethren, a small Protestant denomination in the Lands of Bohemian Crown, maintained contacts with theological authorities and scholars abroad as early as in the 16th century. The discovery of an estate of one of the last pre-1620 bishops of the Unity of the Brethren, Matouš Konečný (1569–1622), the so-called Archive of Matouš Konečný, gave a new impetus to research on intellectual contacts abroad in the 1610s. The Archive of Matouš Konečný contains the correspondence of the scholars, that has been preserved in connection with the education of the future ministers of the Unity at foreign educational institutions. In case of the schools in Herborn and Bremen, the key figure was philologist and theologian Matthias Martinius (1572–1630). His fifteen letters to the aforesaid bishop Konečný have been preserved in his Archive. These, together with the correspondence of the Bremen students, give us an idea of the nature of the relationship between the Unity of the Brethren, or at least its seniors, and the rector of the Gymnasium at Bremen, and testify to the close ties between them, which were also reflected in the printing of religious and educational works of Brethren provenance.
