The study of elites usually focuses on what Charles Wright Mills called “power elites.” In any society, elites represent a unique social group embodying a combination of wealth, power, and prestige. Unlike wealth and, to some extent, power, which are quantifiable, prestige results from recognition in a given group. Pierre Bourdieu proposed that prestige (“social capital”) is generated in various fields of activity. It cannot be measured per se, but one can observe at what proportions it is combined from different types. This points to the respective habitus of elite groups. This talk adopts positional analysis, mapping engagement in different types of organizations as a proxy for different types of capital. It proposes a new analytical model accommodating more varied activities than the usual triumvirate of state administration, business, and politics. These will include, for example, voluntary and charitable activities, production and consumption of culture, involvement in academia or medical professions. The article will characterize the habitus of different cultural milieus and thus enter into a dialog with scholarship focusing predominantly on Western societies.
