The book discusses the development of the field of archaeobotany with an emphasis on the Czech Republic and the surrounding area. It introduces the Czech Republic to foreign readers from a geographical and historical perspective. It provides an overview of the history of archaeobotany and palaeoecology in Czechia and Slovakia, from the earliest accidental finds of plant macroremains through the establishment of the field in the middle of the 20th century to the present day. Part of the presentation of the history of the field are also numerous boxes with the introduction of selected personalities and institutions. The historical overview is divided into six parts: 1) The beginnings of archaeobotany and palaeoecology from the mid-19th century to 1918, 2) The Inter-war Period, 3) The development of archaeobotany after World War II, 4) The first IWGP meeting in Kačina in 1968, Czechoslovakia, 5) Institutionalization of archaeobotany in Czechoslovakia as a discipline (the 1960s–80s), 6) Archaeobotany after 1989. The book also contains the memories of important figures in the field, discussed in the form of interviews. In the Talking sites section, 15 locations are briefly presented, which brought significant results in the field in the international perspective. The book is complemented by documentary appendices about the first International Workgroup for Palaeoethnobotany (IWGP) conference at Kačina Castle in 1968 and photos from the IWGP Nitra 1989 conference.
