Kniha je věnována sepulkrálnímu sochařství českého středověku v rozmezí šesti staletí. Hlavní devíza spočívá v komplexnosti pohledu a v interdisciplinárním přístupu ke studovanému materiálu. Text knihy sestává ze dvou základních částí - z úvodních studií a podrobného katalogu. Úvodní části zaměřují pozornost zejména na význam sepulkrálního sochařství v životě středověké společnosti, na typy nekropolí (královské, církevní, šlechtické), zkoumají vliv husitství a utrakvismu na výtvarnou stránku náhrobků a analyzují kritické výhrady předních husitských a utrakvistických ideologů, které měly negativní vliv na rozvoj náhrobní skulptury, zkoumají typy náhrobků a ikonografickou stránku jejich výzdoby, umístění náhrobků v sakrálním prostoru a jeho sémantický vztah k ostatní chrámové výzdobě, proměny výtvarného ztvárnění i epigrafické stránky v průběhu staletí. Druhou částí knihy je vědecký katalog prací. Katalogová část zahrnuje 260 katalogových hesel náhrobků s kompletní fotodokumentací, přepisem a analýzou náhrobních nápisů a s popisem různých druhů materiálů, z nichž jsou náhrobky vytvořeny. Téma má výrazný mezinárodní aspekt - kniha se zapojuje do mezinárodního bádání o evropské sepulkrální skulptuře a seznamuje odbornou veřejnost s dosud neznámými díly z této oblasti.

The book is devoted to the sepulchral sculpture of the Czech Middle Ages in the context of the life of the society of the time. The guiding principle of the book is the complexity of the view and the interdisciplinary approach to the material. The text of the book is composed of two basic parts – from introductory studies and a detailed catalogue. The introductory parts focus attention particularly on the place of sepulchral monuments in the life of medieval society, types of necropolises (royal, ecclesiastical, aristocratic), the influence of Hussitism and Utraquism on the artistic appearance of the tombstones, analysis of the critical diatribes of the leading Hussite and Utraquist ideologues against the sculptural sphere and their destructive effects slowing the development of tombstone sculpture, types of tombs and the iconographic aspect of their decoration, placement of the tombstone monument in the sacral space and its semantic relationship to the other church decoration, changes of the artistic treatment and epigraphic components of the tombstones during centuries. The second part of the book is a scientific catalogue of the works. The catalogue part includes 260 catalogue entries of sepulchral monuments with complete photo-documentation, transcriptions and analysis of the inscriptions and with a description of various types of material, from which the tombstone monuments were created. The theme has a significant international aspect - the book will engage in international research on European sepulchral sculpture and acquaint the professional public with hitherto unknown works from this area.
