Skutečnost se mi neodkryje, nepůjdu-li jí na půl cesty vstříc, říká William James v eseji “The Will to Believe”, přičemž zmíněnou vstřícností míní jednání na základě nějakého přesvědčení, primárně tedy přesvědčení náboženského, neboť esej se zaměřuje na tento typ zkušenosti. Myšlenku není často možné dokončit, nenačnu-li ji v řeči, říká Heinrich von Kleist v eseji “Über die allmähliche Verfertigung der Gedanken beim Reden”, a poznamenává, že velcí řečníci nikdy nevědí, jak jejich projev skončí. Oba tím směřují k pojetí zkušenosti, která se nedefinuje svou distancí od skutečnosti, v představě prosté adekvace, ale aktivně do této skutečnosti vstupují skrze určité jednání. Co to reálně znamená a jakou roli zde hrají jiné oblasti ducha, nežli sféra exaktních věd, je obsahem příspěvku.

Reality will not reveal itself to me unless I meet it halfway, says William James in his essay “The Will to Believe”, by which he means acting on the basis of a belief, primarily a religious belief, since the essay focuses on this type of experience. It is often impossible to finish an idea without starting it in a speech, says Heinrich von Kleist in his essay “Über die allmähliche Verfertigung der Gedanken beim Reden”, and notes that great orators never know how their speech will end. Both are thus moving towards a conception of experience that it not defined by its distance from reality, in the idea of adequation, but actively enters into that reality by means of a certain action. What this really means, and what role other realms of spirit than the realm of the exact sciences play here, is the subject of the paper.
