The chapter follows the last three years of Alexander Dubček's political career, the period of 1989 to 1992, when he served as Chairman of the Czechoslovak federal parliament. This was a period of establishing a new balance between government institutions, re-structuring the spectrum of political parties, and seeking a new functional federal structure. The author argues that Dubček consciously acted in the interest of the federal parliament, rather than of a party or his own. Yet this produced a widespread criticism and disillusionment with Dubček, and has earned him no respect or gratitude.
