Knížka je věnována češtině Daniela Adama z Veleslavína (1546-1599), pedagoga, historika, nakladatele, tiskaře a organizátora pražského kulturního života druhé poloviny 16. století. Jazykovědný výzkum je založen na jasně definované materiálové bázi textů, jejichž autorem je s velkou pravděpodobností Veleslavín. Výjimečně se jedná o rukopisný záznam, a to o autograf Daniela Adama z Veleslavína. Ten užíváme téměř výhradně při analýzách pravopisu a hláskosloví. Zbytek materiálové báze tvoří tištěné texty, na jejichž vznik měl Daniel Adam rozhodující vliv. Jde hlavně o předmluvy k vydávaným dílům, které signoval sám či s další osobou. Dále se jedná o reedice starších děl, jejichž češtinu Veleslavín výrazně pozměňoval a opravoval. Věnujeme se zejména popisu jazyka, avšak (vzhledem ke kusým a často sporným informacím o jeho životě a díle na straně jedné a vzhledem k rezonování Veleslavínova jména v pozdější české kultuře na straně druhé) připojujeme i kapitolu biografickou. Jádrem knihy jsou však kapitoly o jednotlivých jazykových rovinách - o pravopisu a typografii, o hláskosloví, o tvarosloví, o slovní zásobě a o slovotvorbě, o skladbě a o stylu. Tyto analyticky pojaté kapitoly s mnohými citacemi z Veleslavínových textů doplňuje kapitola shrnující poznatky o jednotlivých jazykových plánech. Veleslavínovu češtinu postihujeme v dynamice jazykového vývoje a snažíme se zachytit její rysy jak vzhledem k situaci ve staré češtině, tak vzhledem ke stavu v moderním jazyce, přičemž zvláště se věnujeme jevům charakteristickým pro humanistickou češtinu. Zjištěné informace konfrontujeme mimo jiné s dobovými jazykovými příručkami a také s jazykem nejprestižnějšího díla 16. století, Bible kralické.Vychází ve spolupráci s Ústavem o jazyk český AV ČR, v.v.i. za podpory Grantové agentury ČR.

The book is devoted to the Czech language of Daniel Adam of Veleslavín (1546-1599), an educator, historian, publisher, printer and organizer of Prague's cultural life in the second half of the 16th century. The linguistic research is based on a clearly defined material base of texts whose author is most likely Veleslavín. Exceptionally, it is a manuscript record, namely the autograph of Daniel Adam of Veleslavín. This is used almost exclusively in spelling and spelling analyses. The rest of the material base consists of printed texts, on the creation of which Daniel Adam had a decisive influence. These are mainly prefaces to published works, which he signed himself or with another person. Furthermore, these are reissues of older works, the Czech of which Veleslavín significantly altered and corrected. We are mainly concerned with descriptions of the language, but (given the scant and often disputed information about his life and work on the one hand, and the resonance of Veleslavín's name in later Czech culture on the other) we also include a biographical chapter. The core of the book, however, are the chapters on the individual levels of language - on spelling and typography, on spelling, on morphology, on vocabulary and word formation, on composition and on style. These analytical chapters, with many quotations from Veleslavin's texts, are complemented by a chapter summarising the findings on the individual language plans. We examine Veleslavín's Czech in the dynamics of linguistic development and try to capture its features both in relation to the situation in Old Czech and in relation to the state of the modern language, with particular attention to phenomena characteristic of humanistic Czech. We confront the information found with, among other things, contemporary language manuals and also with the language of the most prestigious work of the 16th century, the Bible of Kralice. The book is published in cooperation with the Institute of the Czech Language of the CAS, v.v.i. with the support of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic.
