Emil Saudek (1876–1941) wuchs in einer jüdischen Familie in der böhmisch-mährischen Provinz auf, studierte und arbeitete viele Jahre in Wien und ließ sich 1922 anschließend in Prag nieder. In Wien verkehrte er in kulturellen Kreisen und stand so in Kontakt mit vielen Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftstellern seiner Zeit. Neben seiner Beamtentätigkeit übersetzte er die Werke von so bedeutenden tschechischen Autoren wie Otokar Březina, J. S. Machar oder Tomáš G. Masaryk ins Deutsche. Der Band widmet sich der Biografie Saudeks und behandelt seine übersetzerischen und publizistischen Tätigkeiten sowie seine Rolle als Vermittler zwischen Provinz und Metropole und zwischen deutschsprachiger und tschechischer Kultur in einem breiteren historischen Kontext.

Emil Saudek (1876–1941) grew up in a Jewish family in the Bohemian-Moravian province, studied and worked in Vienna for many years, and then settled in Prague in 1922. In Vienna he frequented in artistic and cultural circles and was thus in contact with many writers of his time. In addition to his work as a bank clerk, he translated the works of such important Czech authors as Otokar Březina, J. S. Machar, and Tomáš G. Masaryk into German. The book is devoted to Saudek’s biography and deals with his translating and publishing activities as well as his role as a mediator between the region and the city, and between German-language and Czech culture, in a broader historical context.
