The article uses 112 realistic landscape paintings mostly from 1728 to 1976 and compares landscape coverage with topographic maps from several periods from 1764 to 2006. The TopoLandUse database was used to analyze land use changes and major trends, which consists of vector data on land use from five periods and is based on vectorization of topographic maps. Comparison of landscape painting with topographic maps showed an overall agreement between the two types of sources. Analyzes of changes in soil cover in the areas captured in the pictures confirmed general trends that can be observed not only in the Czech Republic but also elsewhere in Europe.
