Tato kapitola se zabývá postavením nemuslimů a jejich podílem na životě společnosti v Osmanské říši v průběhu její více než šestisetdvacetileté existence. Text nejprve popisuje postavení těchto komunit v raném období osmanských dějin v počátečních fázích územního rozšiřování říše, a to se záměrem porozumět otázce, zda nemuslimové v tomto období politické změny pouze pasivně přijímali, nebo zda se na utváření říše aktivně podíleli. Kapitola dále analyzuje způsoby začleňování nemuslimů do státního aparátu Osmanské říše prostřednictvím „odvodu chlapců“ (devşirme) do armády a státní správy a prostřednictvím systému přidělování léna (timar). Text rovněž zkoumá změny, jež přinesla první světová válka, a vysvětluje podobu dnešního Blízkého východu.

This chapter deals with the position of non-Muslims in the Ottoman Empire, and their contribution to society from the empire's constitution to its dissolution. The text opens with a description of the position of these communities in the early stages of Ottoman territorial expansion, intending to understand whether non-Muslims only passively accepted political change or whether they were active participants in shaping the emerging political entity. The chapter then analyses how far non-Muslims integrated into the Ottoman state apparatus through the “deportation of boys” (devşirme) into the army and state administration and through the timar system. The chapter also surveys the changes brought about by the outbreak of World War I and explains the shape of today's Middle East.
