In Central Europe, the 16th century witnessed a pervasive break in the perception of nature - architecture with a recreational or relaxing function became more appreciated, in German terminology, usually referred to as Lusthaus, Ruhelust, Sanssouci, which the English term summer palace describes only in that these buildings were used mainly in summer. The number of such objects associated with the name of Archduke Ferdinand II since he became governor of Tyrol is unusually high and of great artistic interest, although most of them have disappeared either completely or partially. From a typological point of view, there is a certain development from the medieval hunting lodges, with the choice of a location in the centre of the hunting grounds, but apart from that their immediate surroundings consisted of an architect-designed garden. Most of them provided views of the surrounding Alpine landscape – they fulfilled the function of a “belvedere”. The article analyses the preserved but also lost architectural monuments on the basis of records in the inventories and also focuses on contemporary terminology a typology of architecture.
