This essay examines the circumstances leading to the realization of individual buildings at Prague Castle during the regency of Ferdinand II and traces his role in it. It shows that the creation of each project was very complicated, and the archduke’s role was relatively limited. The lack of finances played the main role and probably also king’s desire to realise relatively austere buildings in the castle grounds, which is especially the case with the archduke’s palace by the White Tower, which lagged far behind contemporary noble palaces in the castle and its surroundings. Much more room seems to have been given to the archduke in the field of leisure architecture; during his regency, a second storey added to the Summer Palace in the Royal Garden, and it can be assumed that, as with the Star Summer Palace, the archduke may have been actively involved in its design.
