Autor podává stručný nástin historie Slovanského ústavu v Praze, který byl během uplynulého století opakovaně založen a rušen a znovu obnovován. Vznikl ve dvacátých letech 20. století z podnětu prezidenta T. G. Masaryka, ale po pouhých patnácti letech pozoruhodné mnohostranné vědecké činnosti byl zrušen v době nacistické okupace. Po osvobození republiky byl obnoven, byť na mnohem skrovnější úrovni, aby byl po komunistickém puči roku 1953 výrazně reformován podle sovětského vzoru a včleněn do nově založené Československé akademie věd. Ovšem už o deset let později byl znovu zrušen a jeho jednotlivé části byly rozptýleny do jiných ústavů. Nicméně po sametové revoluci někteří jeho dřívější pracovníci prosadili navzdory různým administrativním i ideologickým námitkám ze strany některých politiků jeho restituci. Ovšem, podobně jako ve dvacátých letech, trvalo zase plných šest let tvrdého úsilí, než byl Slovanský ústav uznán a potvrzen jako jeden z plnoprávných ústavů Akademie věd ČR Za čtvrt století své obnovené existence však řadou publikovaných vědeckých prací, edic pramenů, slovníků, odborných výstav i aktivní účastí na mezinárodních konferencích, z nichž mnohé sám uspořádal, však jednoznačně prokázal, že si své obnovení plně zasloužil a že jeho činnost je významným přínosem k českému vědeckému i kulturnímu životu.

The author presents a short outline of the history of the Institute of Slavonic Studies in Prague that in the course of the last century was founded, several times abolished and anew restored. It was President Thomas G. Masaryk himself who in early 1920s came with the idea to establish it. In the course of following 15 years of its existence the Institute of Slavonic Studies (ISS) ranked among the most renowned scholarly and cultural institutions in Czechoslovakia. Its activities were considerably paralyzed by German occupants and finally, in 1943, the Institute was definitely abolished. However, immediately after the end of World War II and the liberation of the country the ISS was restored again, though on a much more modest basis. Shortly after the communist takeover, in 1953 it was considerably transformed on the Soviet pattern and included into the newly established Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Nonetheless, ideological objections against its activities were raised by various party authorities and only 10 years later, in 1963, it was abolished once again, several departments were incorporated into othe Academic institutes while a number of its scholars were dismissed and lost any chance to continue their scholarly careers. Not all of them, however, gave up and after the Velvet Revolution they strongly demanded the restitution of the ISS. They had to cope with various administrative obstacles as well as with ideological objections (though this time of different type) raised by some influential politicians. In spite of all difficulties in the spring 1992 they finally managed, although, like in 1920s, it took six next years of hard effort until the Institute of Slavonic Studies achieved its independent legal status enjoying an equal footing ad the other Institutes of the Academy. In a quarter century of its restored existence the Institute has proved its legitimacy and thanks to numerous scholarly publications, material editions, dictionaries, specialist exhibitions and international conferences it has shown unequivocally that its expert activities mean a very significant contribution to the Czech scholarly and cultural life.
