En 1928-1929 le philosophe Aby Warburg s’est intéressé de près à la cosmologie et à l’éthique de Giordano Bruno, attirant l’attention sur l’attachement du philosophe aux images mythologiques et à la pensée astrologique. Croisant la lecture du Spaccio della bestia trionfante et celle des Eroici furori, l’historien de l’art a interprété la révolution brunienne comme un mouvement d’arrachement à l’astrologie vers l’astronomie moderne et a souligné l’importance de “l’affect héroïque” dans ce processus de rationalisation. Revenant sur les étapes de l’interprétation de Bruno par Warburg, l’article montre que celle-ci éclaire un aspect fondamental de l’anthropologie historique de l’historien de l’art: l’idée selon laquelle, à la Renaissance, l’expérience passionnée transmise par les Pathosformeln de l’Antiquité tardive a autant contribué au surgissement du sujet moderne que la révolution scientifique copernicienne.

In 1928-1929, the art historian Aby Warburg took a close interest in the cosmology and ethics of Giordano Bruno, drawing attention to the philosopher’s attachment to mythological images and astrological thought. Crossing the reading of the Spaccio della bestia trionfante with that of the Eroici furori, the art historian interpreted the Brunian revolution as a movement away from astrology towards modern astronomy and stressed the importance of the “heroic affect” in this process of rationalisation. Returning to the stages of Warburg’s interpretation of Bruno, the article shows that it sheds light on a fundamental aspect of the art historian’s historical anthropology: the idea that, in the Renaissance, the passionate experience transmitted by the Pathosformeln of late antiquity contributed as much to the emergence of the modern subject as the Copernican scientific revolution.
