The exposure of the human population to nanoparticles has been increasing. Inorganic nanoparticles easily penetrate the human body, are biologically active, have a large specific surface area and are able to persist in the environment and accumulate there. Many of them are also promoters/inhibitors of amyloid fibril formation. Amyloidoses are very serious diseases that are characterized by amyloid deposition in various organs and tissues causing their dysfunction. This review addresses the influence of inorganic nanoparticles on the process of amyloid fibril formation, which is a popular topic in nanoparticle science because of associated public health concerns. The effect of nanoparticles on amyloid fibril formation is dependent on several parameters such as nanoparticle size, shape and surface chemistry. It was found that the same type of nanoparticle may have different effects on the process of amyloid fibril formation depending on the model system used. They can promote the fibrillation of some model protein systems, but on the other hand, they can inhibit the fibrillation of others. Some nanoparticles can even decompose amyloid fibrils.
