The study applies the theoretical fundament of fictional worlds theory to the selected works of Franz Kafka. The study deals primarily with the concept of fictional worlds, their typology, the notions of intensional functions and narrative modalities, and especially the notion of gaps. Metamorphosis, America, The Trial, and The Castle are in turn examined by the above listed theoretical instruments with a special focus on their protagonists and their relationships with the worlds they inhabit. As a result, a comparative analysis of gaps, their types and distribution is provided.
