Our work has led us to conclude that the practical application of chemical compounds produced by macrophytes to eliminate cyanobacterial bloom may have lower prospects than previously expected. Our systematic review highlighted the inconsistent effects of macrophytes when more than one study of a macrophyte species was available. In our experiment investigating the effects of 19 macrophyte species, an inhibitory effect occurred only 15 times out of 532 experimental variants. The inhibition of cyanobacterial growth was exhibited by Chara globularis, Ceratophyllum submersum, Elodea nuttallii, Hydrilla verticillata, Myriophyllum heterophyllum, M. spicatum, and Vallisneria americana. All these species are submerged macrophytes and, thus, we suppose that our results may be applicable to the restoration of water bodies. However, further research is necessary to fully explore the nature and possible socio-economic significance of the effects of macrophytes on the growth of bloom-forming cyanobacteria.
