The self-healing effect of several combinations of different additives (dicarboxylic acids, sodium carbonate, expansive additive, silica fume, fibers) incorporated in artificially cracked concrete specimens, was investigated. Their effectiveness was assessed through stereomicroscopic observations and durability tests. The structure and chemistry of the healing products were characterized with optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The additives ensured closing crack widths up to 400 μm. The combination dicarboxylic acids/expansive additive performs best by preserving unreacted clinker grains that may hydrate at later stages. Carbonation of portlandite led to calcite precipitation either in bulk (using fibers as nucleation sites) or on the cracks’ surface.
