Lynx populations in Western Europe have been recovered mainly due to reintroductions in previous decades. A reintroduction or reinforcement will be needed also in future for the successful conservation of some populations in critical status. In spite of the progress in conservation science and decades of common international legislation in Europe, we fear that careful planning, international coordination and consideration of human dimension aspects are still not a standard part of all lynx reintroduction projects. Any large carnivore reintroduction is a controversial issue and we argue that appropriate transnational assessment is especially important for highly mobile species such as lynx.
