Tato edice obsahuje úvodní studii „Robert Kalivoda a teoretická reflexe moderní reality“, kterou napsal Roman Kanda. Ten je také autorem ediční poznámky a edičního komentáře i veškerých oprav a dodatků k původnímu textu autora. Dílo Roberta Kalivody (1923-1989) představuje významnou hodnotu českého myšlení 20. století. Kniha Moderní duchovní skutečnost a marxismus vyšla poprvé v roce 1968. Představuje celek tematicky provázaných studií, v nichž autor zkoumá teoretické koncepce, jejichž prostřednictvím poznáváme i spoluutváříme skutečnost. Kalivoda je marxista a jeho metodou je dialektika. Jeho marxistická pozice zůstává otevřena podnětům nemarxistických koncepcí, jeví-li se jako metodologicky nosné. Poté dochází k jejich integraci do marxistického základu. Díky tomuto procesu se ovšem sám marxistický základ proměňuje – a to nikoli na principu pouhého doplnění, nýbrž prostřednictvím tvůrčí sebekritiky. Jejím výsledkem je podstatná (nikoli však zcela přepodstatňující) teoretická revize původního marxistického stanoviska. V knize Moderní duchovní skutečnost a marxismus v rolích nemarxistických koncepcí, které znovu vymezují sám marxismus, postupně defilují strukturalismus, Freudova psychoanalýza a ideologie libertinismu. Ve studii „Emancipace a utopie“ jsou to ještě obsahy literárně reprezentované utopické imaginace a historické formulace emancipačního ideálu.

This edition includes an introductory study “Robert Kalivoda and Theoretical Reflection of Modern Reality” written by Roman Kanda. He is also the author of the “Editorial notes and editorial comments” and any corrections and additions to the author’s original text. The works of Robert Kalivoda (1923–1989) represents a significant value of 20th century Czech thought. His book Modern Spiritual Reality and Marxism was first published in 1968. It presents a series of thematically interconnected studies in which the author explores theoretical concepts through which we learn about and participate in forming reality. Kalivoda is a Marxist and his method is dialectic. His Marxist position remains open to the impulses of non-Marxist concepts – provided they appear to be methodologically sound. Then they are integrated into the Marxist foundation. This process, however, transforms the Marxist fundation itself – not on the principle of a mere supplementation, but through creative self-criticism. It results in a substantial (but not entirely substance-changing) theoretical revision of the original Marxist position. In his book Modern Spiritual Reality and Marxism, structuralism, Freud’s psychoanalysis and the ideology of libertinism are all presented in the roles of non-Marxist concepts that redefine Marxism itself. In the study “Emancipation and Utopia” this also includes the contents of literally represented utopian imagination and historical formulations of the ideal of emancipation.
