This Letter responds to the comments of Kohl et al. (2021) regarding the reliability of methane (CH4) fluxes from tropical trees on Réunion as measured by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. • We evaluated potential interference of 11 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly occurring in tropical trees on CH4 concentrations in stem chambers on Réunion. The potential interference-corrected stem CH4 uptake (−15.1 ± 1.9 μg−CH4 m−2 h−1) did not differ significantly from the initially reported flux (−15.6 ± 2.0 μg−CH4 m−2 h−1). The stem CH4 flux measurements on Réunion seem to be reliable. • We further present experimental results comparing FTIR and gas chromatographic approaches for CH4 (and nitrous oxide) flux measurements in beech stems. • We revealed no substantial discrepancies in tree stem CH4 fluxes when measured by FTIR analyzer, as stated by Kohl et al. (2019). • Based upon our knowledge, the analyses performed, and inconsistencies identified in Kohl et al. (2019), we recognize that elevated VOC concentrations can interfere with CH4 concentration measurements when using FTIR technology. Under natural field conditions, however, such interference seems to be less significant than proposed by Kohl et al. (2019, 2021). Such interference is highly species-dependent and cannot be generalized for all ecosystems worldwide.
